Please join us as we observe Florida’s Emancipation Day with special guest and local artist Charles Eady.
This program will offer a thoughtful look at the history of slavery in Spanish-held and early U.S. Territorial Florida, and how these events influenced relationships and treaty negotiations between the Seminoles and the U.S. government. We’ll also explore why Florida commemorates Emancipation Day on May 23, rather than on the federal Juneteenth holiday.
A special highlight of the event will be Charles Eady’s unveiling of an original painting featuring Black Seminole interpreter Abraham.
