Families are invited to embark on an exciting cultural adventure at the Discovery Center’s newest exhibit, Kenya’s Kids. Opening Saturday, Jan. 18, and running through Saturday, May 10, this immersive experience provides a window into the daily lives of children in Kenya, a country where modern advancements blend seamlessly with rich traditions. Through five engaging, hands-on environments, visitors of all ages can explore and compare the similarities and differences between their lives and those of children in East Africa.
Highlights of the Kenya’s Kids Experience:
• Rural Living: Step into a Kenyan home to learn about water conservation and try traditional Khanga cloths for carrying babies or dressing as a Maasai, one of Kenya’s 43 ethnic groups.
• Classroom Exploration: Discover Swahili using interactive touchscreen notebooks, just like Kenyan students.
• Market Adventures: Convert dollars to shillings and shop at a duka (small shop) and outdoor market while learning about Kenya’s innovative mobile banking system, M-Pesa.
• Wildlife Conservation: Become a ranger driving a safari vehicle, or a keeper at an elephant orphanage caring for abandoned animals.
• Augmented Reality: Snap photos of life-sized animal sculptures crafted by Nairobi artisans and use augmented reality tablets to bring the animals’ habitats to life.
