Training
Dani Scully will work with your horse to understand where they are in their training. Also thru constant evaluation, the horse will make it clear to Dani where they are mentally, and just how much they can take. Dani will share with you she learns about your horse to help you comprehand where the horse is coming from, and to promote a deeper understanding with your equine companion. Dani doesnt follow any "marketed method" of training. Her version of training is individualized for each animal. Just like each and every one of us is different, so are the horses.
The first and most important thing to do in training is gain the horses trust and respect. This is done thru daily handling, but more importantly thru round pen work. The round pen is our classroom and we try to make learning as fun and exciting but safe and comfortable as possible.
Initially with every horse, regardless of their level of training, each horse will start with round pen work, and learning voice commands. This allows the horse to learn the trainers consistent cues and to become comfortable with the trainers body language. Even though theses amazing creatures have been domesticated, they are still prey animals. Nothing is worse than having a horse afraid of you when you are trying to put your foot in that stirrup. in the same token, the trainer is going to learn if the horse is comfortable, or if there is an issue that has not been yet addressed, and then can correct an underlying issue, to continue the horses training. There are times when an issue doesn't present itself until the work begins. Perhaps there is a joint issue? or an ill fitting saddle. Have the teeth been successfuly floated? Scully Equestrian Services wants to resolve any issues early on, so it won't impede the speed to which the horse is capable of learning. The round pen stage goes very quickly for horses that have already done this, and done it correctly, but it is a necessary step in the training process.
Once the horse has learned that the trainer is safe and consistent, we can move on to other training, for example, accepting a saddle or sircingle, learning to give to pressure, and more complex actions.
Dani’s philosophy is that if you can get a horse to figure something out “on their own” the lesson is so much worth while then to “get it” because someone is applying pain. Dani will show you her techniques so you can take these with you and apply them at home if it is something you feel comfortable with.
When starting a green horse, the trainer will get them accustomed to the bit and biting process before her bum is ever in the saddle. When it does come time for saddle time, the horse will start with out a bit, in a simple plain halter. This teaches the horse to give with out the added pinch in the mouth. Only then, when the horse is giving and flexing well and ready for more advanced training, does she apply a bit and bridle. With the added step of biting and bridling during “ground training” the horse is already accustomed to the tack and is comfortable with the process and the sensation.
Dani is available to come to your location to evaluate your horse for your training needs or to try to “discover” what may be fueling your horses’ unwanted behavior. Please see pricing page for more information on our evaluation fees.
Lessons
Scully Equestrian Services offers lessons to beginner and intermediate riders. Our sessions are typically an hour, but we will go over if we have the time and opportunity to. We will try to make learning as fun and safe as possible. We start lessons as young a 5; however their sessions tend to be shorter.
When taking lessons with Scully Equestrian Services he or she will not only learn whilst on the back of one of our lesson horses. During the whole session we will be exposing the student to new things in effort to broaden the students' horizon to new things. We will learn about, equine safety management practices, parts of the horse, breeds and breed history, tack and tack maintenance, equine management as well as barn management. Our learning does not just occur when your feet are in the stirrups, but on the ground as well. Please feel free to meet the lesson horses on the "meet the facility" page. Feel free to look over lesson charges on the pricing pages.
